She is promoting her new film upcoming Luc Besson film Columbiana recently revealed why she took on the role.

The oppurtunity with [producer/screenwriter] Luc Besson, another filmmaker I completely respect, and who’s known for writing great roles for women. And I was excited about working with an international cast and crew. And even though it’s a typical story of revenge, it’s a story told through the eyes of a woman who was hurt when she was a little girl and who grows up wanting justice for what was done to her. I felt touched by that.

She is also using her voice for a cause to support FINCA International, an organization that promotes women’s entrepreneurship to help escape poverty in developing countries through microfinancing initiatives.

“There are so many women in the world who are less fortunate, and struggling to provide for their families,” Saldana said in a statement. “FINCA is working tirelessly to help give these women a hand up, so that they are able to take care of their families and break free of poverty. We hope to show how a small loan can change the lives of so many women living in poverty—and better the lives of their children.”
